MSM

ONE OF NATURE’S MOST POWERFUL REMEDIES

Main ingredient in  ANATOMIX  is MSM

(ALSO CONTAINS   VITAMIN C AND CAT’S CLAW)

MSM  is present in most green plant foods and certain algae, but is destroyed with dehydration and heat.   Simply stated, if you cook your food, you’re eliminating many important nutritional benefits, including MSM.

Proteins are essential for proper cellular metabolism and soft tissue synthesis.   Proper protein synthesis can only be achieved with amino acid monomers which maintain the correct molecular framework for soft and connective tissue throughout the human body.

Because protein is the main ingredient in most soft tissue, beneficial effects from regular usage of MSM have been reported.   These benefits include:  alleviating arthritis, improved flexibility, smoother skin, healthier hair and nails, and faster and better healing from surgical procedures or traumatic events.

MSM is the transport molecule for elemental sulphur which is required for proper assimilation of the amino acids methionine and cysteine.   In addition, the peptide hormone insulin requires sulphur in its molecular structure and numerous other proteins, catalysts, and enzymes incorporate sulphur into their molecular framework.

ABOUT MSM

MSM  (methylsulfonylmethane), a naturally occurring dietary derivation of DMSO, serves as an important source of bio-available dietary sulphur and when administered orally, is effective in ameliorating symptoms of physiological response to stress including gastrointestinal upset, inflammation of the mucous membranes, pain associated with musculo-skeletal system disorders, and infectant allergens.   MSM has proved useful as a dietary supplement for both children and adults, including geriatric patients.

MSM is a naturally occurring sulphur-containing compound that facilitates multiple functions in the body.   MSM is naturally present in body fluids and tissues and is found in milk and a variety of fruits, vegetables and grains in small amounts.   At low levels of ingestion, it functions as a normal dietary ingredient and as an easily assimilated source of essential dietary sulphur.   At higher levels it functions as a pharmaceutically active agent which can be used safely and effectively for a variety of purposes.

The development of MSM as a dietary supplement stemmed from research on DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide).    As a stable, odourless dietary metabolite of DMSO, MSM possesses certain biomedical properties similar to DMSO together with additional biological activity not possessed by DMSO.   Unlike DMSO, MSM is a dietary factor and is free of the unpleasant odour found with the use of DMSO.   MSM, like DMSO, enhances urinary taurine secretion produced by aromatic hydrocarbons in man and neutralizes  the toxicity of anticholinesterases, thereby providing protection against insecticide exposure or ingestion.

MSM and many precursor compounds which are readily converted to MSM in the body, are found in most natural, unprocessed foods.   However, because of its volatility, it is readily lost when fresh food is processed and/or stored.   Unless the diet consists largely of raw, unprocessed, foods it is unlikely that sufficient MSM will be ingested to contribute significantly to the daily nutritional requirements, thus furthering the high incidence of sulphur deficient diets which exist globally.

Sulphur plays an indispensable role in human nutrition which is often overlooked.   It is responsible for the confirmation of body proteins though the formation of disulfide bonds, thereby holding connective tissue together.   Thiol (i.e. sulfhydryl) groups are vital for the catalytic function of several body enzymes.   To perform these roles, constant intake of assimilable sulphur is needed by the body.

Although MSM has not yet been established to be a vitamin, it does have a vitamin-like moderating or normalizing activity for various body functions, as there appears to be high correlation between abnormal physiological symptoms and low MSM blood levels in human beings.   Although MSM is found as a natural constituent of food stuffs, like vitamin D, the principle supply is believed to be synthesized by the body using one of its naturally occurring precursor compounds.   Also, excretion data shows that MSM occurs in lower concentrations with increasing age.   Too low a body concentration of MSM may potentially result in adverse physical and psychological stress, tissue and organ malfunction, fatigue and increased susceptibility to disease.

MSM an Extraordinary Discovery

Research or clinical experience so far suggest that MSM may be an appropriate food supplement for the following:

Acne   Allergies   Arthritis   Asthma   Breast cancer   Brittle nails   Burns   Cramps   Constipation   Detoxification   Diabetes   Digestion   Emphysema   Energy   Eyes   Heartburn   Lung cancer   Lung disease   Lupus   Memory   Mental normalcy   Oral hygiene   Pain   Parasites   Inflammation   Insect bites   Scar tissue   Skin and Hair   Snoring   Sore muscles   Stress   Sunburn

MSM  has shown significant and proven results in the treatment of arthritis, allergies, burns, constipation, anxiety, stress, memory loss and even snoring.   This organic mineral has been shown to dramatically slow down the growth rate of certain cancers.   You may be thinking that this sounds like one of those magic elixirs being sold from the back of a wagon, but this is not folklore,  MSM is backed by over 34 years of clinical research and university studies and involving over 12,000 patients.

What’s more the leading authority on MSM, Dr. Stanley Jacob – who has given over three decades of study and research to this supplement – has been a practicing medical doctor, surgeon and researcher for nearly 50 years.   Dr. Jacob has a medical degree from Ohio State University, a research fellowship from Harvard Medical School and was Chief Resident in surgery at Harvard Surgery Service, Boston City Hospital.   He is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the world and was named Humanitarian of the Year in l983 by the National Health Federation.

MSM is Natural

MSM stands for Methyl Sulphonyl Methane.   It is a naturally occurring nutrient, an organic sulphur compound that is found in the normal human diet and in the diet of virtually all other animals.   Sulphur is present in all living organisms.   It actually belongs in the same chemical family that includes oxygen.   Organisms that live in environments where thee is no oxygen, such as some bacteria, often replace oxygen with sulphur as their source of energy.   Without sulphur life as we know it would not exist.   Some of the natural functions that sulphur gives us include:

The question which is frequently asked is, where is MSM found?   The cycle of MSM begins in the ocean, in microscopic plants called plankton.   These release sulphur compounds into the ocean water, which are then released up into the atmosphere.   Here the atmospheric sulphur is converted into MSM which then falls back to earth in the rain.   Plants take up MSM very rapidly into their root systems and concentrate it a hundred-fold.   MSM is incorporated into the plant’s structure; and we humans can then absorb it from the fruit and vegetables that we eat.   Eventually MSM finds its way back to the sea and the sulphur cycle begins again.

Today, however, we are processing too many foods, which reduces the MSM content, and we may be getting less MSM into our bodies than we require.   MSM levels do diminish in our bodies with advancing age.   Dr. Stanley Jacob, having studied 12,000 people, believes that almost everyone is deficient, but with age the deficiency grows even more pronounced.

Recovering from Burns

Bill Rich, a retired mechanic in Portland, Oregon, tells a horrifying story of being trapped inside a burning car.   “The doctors spent six months trying to put me back together.”   With a patchwork of keloid scars – from the burns and extensive grafts – Rich jokes “I made Frankenstein look handsome.”

For years he also suffered excruciating pain.   After a couple of walks from the repair bay to the parts department where he worked at the time he’d practically buckle over and cry from the pain in his ankles and knees.   Then in the early 1980’s a Vet suggested that he try a supplement routinely used to treat pain in horses and other animals, known as MSM.

“In three days most of my leg pain was  gone.”   He eventually developed an MSM cream that he regularly rubbed on his skin.   Incredibly, his flat purple scarring – already years old – started to vanish, and was replaced by pink round skin.

 Pain and Arthritis Research

Other people claim that MSM has relieved their joint and muscle pain.   Father Sam Bungo of Frenchville, Pennsylvania suffered from bursitis and arthritic symptoms in his knees and one shoulder.   “A lot of time I would get up in the morning and have to go downstairs very slowly, one step at a time.”   That was before he began using MSM a year ago.   “Now I have no trouble with my knees.”  He says.   However the shoulder pain returns if he stops taking MSM for a few days.

Sulphur concentration in arthritic cartilage has been shown to be about one-third the level found in normal cartilage.   Dr. Stanley Jacob studied a strain of mice prone to the spontaneous development of joint problems similar to those seen in rheumatoid arthritis.   He found that animals that were given MSM in their drinking water suffered no degeneration of articular cartilage, while 50% of the mice who were given plain tap water to drink developed major degeneration of the cartilage, similar to the condition rheumatoid arthritis in man.   Jacob and his colleagues have also done a number of studies on osteo-arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis in man.   In one study, patients with x-ray evidence of degenerative joint disease given MSM had an 82% reduction in pain after six weeks, compared to a 28% reduction in those given dummy pills.

Summing up, Dr. Jacob says “we have documented in the test tube and in lower animals that MSM lessens inflammation, reduces pain, improves blood supply and lowers muscle spasm in inflammation or in any painful condition, such as tennis elbow or carpal tunnel syndrome (in the wrist).   We are seeing a lot of carpal tunnel syndrome now because everyone is using computers and are repeatedly injuring the median nerve in the wrist.   We have found that giving MSM by skin and by mouth tends to improve tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome and bursitis etc.

Muscle Pain and Weakness

A 72 year old woman from Burlington, Ontario was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica and fibro myalgia 0 diseases characterised by muscle weakness and pain.   Hunched over, she was treated with prednisone, a hormone, but her health failed to get much better.   In 1995 she travelled to see Dr. Jacob who gave her MSM.   “I was pretty close to being an invalid,”  she says.   “Now I do my washing, ironing, baking and cooking.   MSM is a pretty marvellous thing

Help for Arteries?

There is evidence too that MSM may help prevent the narrowing of the arteries that causes heart attack and stroke, two major causes of death.

Slowing Cancer

MSM seems to be helpful in slowing breast and colon cancers

A Patent for Snoring?

One of the most interesting patents Dr. Jacob holds on MSM is for the relief of snoring.   His team studied 25 people suffering from chronic snoring and gave them a solution of MSM in water to use as nose drops, 15 minutes before sleep.   There was a significant reduction in 80% of the subjects after 1 – 4 days of use.   When eight of the patients were given a salt solution instead seven of them complained that their snoring had returned.

Digestion and Constipation

MSM has been shown to help add flexibility and permeability to most forms of tissue.   Tissue damage anywhere along the digestive tract can result in long-standing digestive disorders including inflammation of the mucous membranes, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea and hyperacidity.   People with these symptoms often experience dramatic relief when taking MSM.

Food allergies can be a source, not only of immune system deficiency, but also of major digestive problems.   Individuals who experience allergic responses to certain foods such as wheat, prawns, citrus or milk, report an improved or complete tolerance to these substances when they take MSM.   It seems that MSM binds with the offending agent and through a process called “sulphur conjugation” produces harmless substances, which are then excreted from the body.

MSM is also excellent for constipation, probably because it helps the body retain moisture.   As a rule, people have increasing problems with constipation as they age.   However, taking a gram of MSM a day tends to normalise constipation.

Eyes

Reports suggest that MSM may help reduce or prevent cataracts by improving the permeability of the membranes in the eyes.   MSM has also been noted to improve blurred vision, bloodshot eyes, red spots and floaters.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition brought on in part by poor metabolism resulting in excess blood sugar and a lack of insulin, or a cell resistance to insulin.   Studies suggest that taking MSM regularly (a minimum of 2 grams a day) causes the cells to become more permeable, improving pancreatic function (where insulin is produced).   Diabetics are advised to let their doctor know if they are taking MSM as their need for insulin may be reduced.

Scleroderma

Scleroderma is a chronic disease with scarring of the skin, joints and internal organs;   Patients can experience difficulty swallowing and heartburn.   Dr. Jacob, who has served as the medical director for the Scleroderma International Foundation for more than 25 years, says that MSM eases symptoms by normalising collagen formation.

MSM for Lungs

MSM is already showing itself as an important food supplement for those with lung difficulties.   A man from Cleveland suffered from Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease for years.   He would have to stop three times to catch his breath while walking to and from the rural mailbox, a distance of 150 feet.   Almost like clockwork he’d be hospitalised every six months with severe breathing problems.   Adams started taking MSM in April 1997 and started breathing more easily after just four days.   When he skipped taking MSM in August of that year, he suffered severe breathing problems and ended up in hospital for five weeks.   Since then he has taken MSM daily and continues to feel better.   “Without it, I’m not sure I’d be talking to you,”  he said.

In a study, patients with emphysema were given MSM.   After four weeks these patients had at least doubled the distance they were able to walk.   The fluid on their lungs also disappeared.

How Safe is MSM?

Dr. Jacob has been studying the toxicity level of MSM for several decades and has found that it is one of the least toxic substances in biology and medicine.   MSM is similar in toxicity to water.   Common table salt is more toxic than MSM.   The team did some evaluations on human volunteers and gave them up to one gram per Kilogram of body weight, orally and by skin for 30 days, but no serious toxicity was seen.   In fact Dr. Jacob’s clinic have studied over 12,000 patients at levels of more than 2 grams daily for long periods of time without side effects.

However, to be absolutely sure that MSM was safe for his patients, Dr. Jacob has himself been taking 30 grams a day for the last 20 years with no harmful effect.   He notes that prior to taking MSM he would have a cold or the ‘flu two or three times a year.   He has not had a single cold or flu in the twenty years he has been taking MSM.

Any Side Effects?

Basically, MSM is very safe and has no side effects.   However, it does have a detoxifying effect on the body as a whole.   In the first few days and weeks of taking MSM the body is going to undertake quite a lot of spring-cleaning and rebuilding.   In the course of this you may experience a few healing symptoms.   Some people experience an itchy skin for instance, which is then replaced by a younger, smoother skin.

Others feel a few twinges as old injuries in joints and muscles undergo repair.   Eyes may temporarily seem a little more blurred.   Any symptoms, such as these, are probably indicators that MSM is working.

“Dr. Jacob believes that MSM is probably the most important substance we have had for the prevention of allergies since the advent of anti-histamine”
