During his 17-year networking career Neil Verlander has entered many car incentives without ever begin a winner until now!.

A phone call from VWD co-founder Tom Brodie turned previous disappointment into overwhelming joy as the message sunk in that he had won a £15,000 Mini Cooper - the big prize for introducing the most new members over a designated eight-week period.

'When the incentive was first announced at the Business Development Meeting,' recalled Neil, 'I thought, wow, what a prize for eight weeks work. But, having personally Introduced over 100 people already, I thought I stood little chance of winning the Mini.'
Nevertheless, he decided to 'have a shot at it.' To focus on what he needed to do, he obtained a Mini Cooper brochure and had the picture in front of him day after day.

'I expanded my presence on the Pay Per Click search engines and increased my budget to cope with new traffic,' said Neil. 'I also approached family and friends, who had not joined me to date, and told them what I was doing and that I needed their help and support.'

He introduced an additional 115 members before the Sunday midnight deadline but still had a ‘difficult night’s sleep,’ wondering if this time he’d done enough to succeed.

‘Then Tom called,’ added Neil.
‘'I can’t tell you the feeling of relief, joy and pure emotion - mission accomplished! It's not exactly and overnight success story, but it was certainly worth the wait and effort.

‘Thanks go to everyone who supported me in my quest and to the company for putting up the prize. To everyone who came close, I know what that’s like, so take pleasure in the business growth and a great achievement.

‘When I drive round to a few houses and visit a few of the sceptics, l wonder how many times I will hear those immortal words: you were lucky.

Runner-up in the Mini Cooper challenge is John Lamerton, who introduced 97 new members. Third placed Simon Stepsys introduced 81. Both received a cheque for £1,000 in recognition of their efforts.


John Lammerton, ‘They say second place is for losers,’ said John, managing director of Big Idea Media. ‘I would certainly disagree. We weren’t really aiming to win the car. Our only aim was to increase our monthly cheques by as much as possible.

‘During the competition period the value of our monthly cheques almost doubled. And, of course, the £1,000 runner-up prize will go a long way towards drowning our sorrows.

‘Whilst it is frustrating coming so close to winning, knowing that a little extra effort could have landed us a £15,000 car, that will spur us on to go the extra mile next time. May I suggest an Aston Martin D89!’
