The foundations of the
organic movement were laid down shortly after the Second
World War when synthetic organo-chlorine chemicals such as
DDT and chloro-phenoxy-acetic chemicals began to be commonly
used. This period, 50s through to the 60s, was the start of
the industrialised and chemical based agricultural era and
of global business. It was through dramatic accounts of the
long-term health dangers which DDT and later
organo-phosphates posed to the world wildlife, and
consequently to the human race, that awareness of chemicals
in the environment started to build. Rachel Carson's book
"Silent Spring" exposed the toxic bio-accumulative effects
of chemical pesticides and focused world attention on the
indiscriminate use of them which was sanctioned by
governments of the time. Many businesses saw the opportunity
to establish themselves in the highly profitable fledgling
chemical industry and proliferated into huge global
corporations.
Toxic synthetic chemicals used in agriculture and industry
have been found to bio-magnify (increase in concentration) up
through the food-chain. A good example of Bio-magnification
are the
Beluga whales which are at the top of their food
chain in the St Lawrence estuary in Canada. Concentrations of mercury
100s of times and in some cases 1000s of times the safe limit
set for human consumption have been found in the livers of dead
animals. Also found in abundance in the tissues of dead
animals are DDT - PCBs - PAHs and Nonylphenol
Surfactants (common non-biodegradable detergents) . Another good example
of Bio Magnification is the accumulation of PCBs in
farmed salmon. Some
Scottish salmon have been found
with over 100 times the safe limit for PCBs. Yet PCBs were
banned around 30 years ago!
Humans who are ultimately at the top of the food chain, also
long-lived like whales, absorb and retain toxic cancer
causing chemicals in
body tissues, organs and fat tissues, similar to whales and all
other animals.
The impetus for the Organic Movement was stimulated
significantly during the 70s with TV documentaries of
wildlife and in particular of penguins
from the most pristine area on the planet, the Antarctic.
DDT had reached into every corner of the planet. Birds from
all countries in the world were going into decline. Sick birds
unable to breed due to man made chemicals became a common
site for many alarmed and aware people. The implications of
this chemical assault on animals and humans alike was
becoming abundantly clear. Study after
study showed the so-called "safe" chemical DDT
(and now many others) was one of the major
culprits. Yet DDT had never been used within 2000 miles of
the Antarctic but was permeating into every living creature - including
humans - in the world.
In more recent times the Organic Movement has
been given significant and positive publicity in light of
disturbing events such as outbreaks
of Mad Cow Disease (BSE) in Britain (and many other
countries),
the controversy of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs),
the contamination of milk and meat with antibiotics and
organo-phosphates and the advent of cloning animals for
profit. These "progressive" events have given motivated people
the opportunity to establish organic farms/businesses and
organic outlets which in turn has catered for an ever
increasing number of consumers who wish to
source and use safe non-toxic synthetic chemical free alternatives.
Consumers turning to
certified organic produce wherever it is available is
becoming more main stream as each year passes in all the
major markets of the world.
The general population is becoming much more aware of the
toxic nature of all synthetic chemicals now - than what they were
just a decade ago. If you feel this may be a home
